Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in the skin. However, this acid is lost as a person ages. The treatment aims to replace the lost volume and hydrate the skin, making it look more youthful. The FDA considers Juvederm safe and it was approved for the treatment of nasolabial folds in 2006.
Juvederm is injected into the dermis of the skin using a very small needle. Local anesthetic, ice, or topical creams are often used to make the procedure more comfortable. The procedure only takes 10 to 15 minutes. The amount needed to reach optimal correction is dependent on the size of the area treated and the degree of volume loss. Its effects are not permanent. On average, it lasts for 6 to 9 months. However, some patients have demonstrated that it is possible for it to last 12 months. To maintain its effects, follow-up injections may be necessary.
Juvederm is a safe, minimally invasive filler with few side effects. After the procedure, patients should expect some redness and swelling in the area where Juvederm was injected. Recovery is quick, but you may use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Aspirin and aspirin substitutes should be avoided seven days after the procedure to prevent bruising.
