You might have already heard about the Mohs surgery. It provides the highest cure rate possible and smallest scars achievable. If you live in Northeast Georgia, Athens, Atlanta, or at Lake Oconee, there is now a clinic that offers fellowship trained Mohs Surgery while ensuring you the care, safety, and quality you expect. The Atlanta clinic specializes in Mohs surgery. Headed by Dr. Ross Campbell who has performed nearly 5,000 Mohs procedures, Georgia Skin Cancer & Aesthetic Dermatology seeks to surprise you with the level of care and professionalism you experience.
Frederic Mohs developed the technique that is now known as Mohs Surgery. He was realized the tissue conserving advantage available when cancer is treated with precision under microscopic control.
Mohs surgery is best performed by using the fresh tissue technique. The surgeon outlines the cancerous area using a pen or stain. Local anesthesia is administered and the surgeon then removes the cancerous tissues with a scalpel. The tissue is mapped and processed so that the surgeon who is also trained in pathology, may visualize 100% of the skin edges. This enables the surgeon to remove only tumor-affected tissue and obtain the highest cure rate possible. Once the surgeon is certain that all the affected tissues have been removed, reconstruction efforts may commence immediately.
After the cancer is completely removed, many reconstruction options are available. Some wounds are superficial and allowed to heal without further procedures. Others may require sutures, flaps, or possible grafts. At Georgia Skin Cancer, the physician discusses the reconstruction options with the patient and an agreeable plan is reached to meet the patient’s desires and to provide the most cosmetically appealing results.
After undergoing Mohs Surgery, it is important for patients to receive follow up exams by their dermatologist or primary care physician to prevent and diagnose skin cancer early. Georgia Skin Cancer works in close collaboration with other dermatologists, primary care physicians, plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, and oncologists to ensure you receive the absolute best care possible.
