Summertime means bright sunshine and warmer weather, making it the perfect time to “lay out” at the beach or pool and relax – or to spend hours outside swimming and playing sports with family and friends. However, the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays are powerful enough to cause severe skin damage.
Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to protect your skin from the harsh effects of sunlight. Let’s talk about some of the easy ways in which you can have fun in the sun this summer, and where you can go in Northeast Georgia to keep your skin healthy for a lifetime.
Avoid Intense Sunlight
Avoid being outside between 10 am and 2 pm, which is when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. If you must be outside during this time, try your best to:
- Limit direct exposure to the sun
- Wear protective clothing
- Apply sunscreen
Know the Dangers of Cloudy Days
Direct sunlight delivers the most intense solar radiation to your skin, but don’t let your guard down during cloudy weather. UV rays will still penetrate your skin on overcast days, and you could even get a sunburn after extended time outdoors if you don’t apply sunscreen.
Wear Clothing that Protects Your Skin
Wearing a tightly woven, wide-brimmed hat can help to protect your head and shoulders from the sun. Also, it is best to wear a long-sleeved shirt and even protective pants, such as clothing with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) – which is specifically designed to protect your skin from the sun while still allowing your skin to breathe, and not get too hot.
Apply Sunscreen Throughout the Day
Sunscreen works by preventing UV rays from reaching deep into your skin. As you sweat, and as your skin naturally absorbs the lotion, the sunscreen will wear off – so be sure to apply SPF lotion liberally to your sun-exposed skin every couple of hours. Don’t forget areas such as your ears and the top surfaces of your feet.
Wear Eye and Lip Protection
Wear sunglasses when outdoors to help shield the delicate skin around your eye area from the damage. Also, it is best to protect your lips by using lip balm with an SPF.
Stay in the Shade as Much as Possible
Staying under shady areas can drastically cut back on the amount of UV radiation you receive from the sun. When under the shade, make sure that the shadow covers your body as much as possible. Even a small area of exposure can get a sunburn if it receives enough sunlight.
