WHAT IS PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR?

Tinea (or pityriasis) versicolor is a common yeast infection that typically occurs on the chest, neck, arms, or back. It is caused by an overgrowth of normal yeast on the skin and is not contagious. It appears as discolored light, dark, or pink patches on the skin that can sometimes be flaky. It may also be itchy.

Tinea versicolor is more common during hot, humid months, and it often affects people who perspire heavily. It may clear in the winter months and recur each summer.

TINEA VERSICOLOR TREATMENT OPTIONS

The best treatment option will be determined by your provider at Georgia Skin Cancer & Aesthetic Dermatology depending on the severity and location of the rash.

Treatment options include topical shampoos or creams, or an oral antifungal medication. The rash often clears quickly following treatment, but the skin discoloration may persist longer.

During and following treatment, patients are advised to minimize sun exposure and to apply sunscreen when in the sun to help minimize the appearance of residual skin discoloration.
